What constitutes a scheme of work ?

We expect a good scheme of work to consist of a number of important elements ,each of which makes a contribution towards good , effective teaching.

We aim to ensure that all of our schemes of work will :

A. Be based on a coherent,well-defined programme of study .

B. Have a set of clear objectives for both the teacher and the students

C. Reflect what actually happens in the classroom, be being realistic with regard to the degree of structure, the content of the 'lesson', ability range of the students, and to the availability of resources.

D. Provide a set of resources and strategies which will allow effective differentiation to be achieved.

E. Provide a set of resources and strategies which allow the development of practical skills within the programme of study.

H. Provide suitable opportunities for monitoring effort, achievement and attainment  of each student.

I. Provide opportunities for the students to take more responsibility for learning, including the monitoring of their own progress,

J. Relate the programme of study to the interests of the students , and thereby improve interest ,motivation and enthusiasm for science.

K. Provide a range of activities, reflecting the need for a variety of  teaching and learning styles.

L. Emphasise the interrelationships between Science,Technology and Society

M. Provide suitable opportunities for the use of Information Technology (ICT ),through the use of word processors, spreadsheets, databases,CD Roms, and measurements and data analysis.

N. Be sufficiently flexible enough to allow the scheme of work to evolve,by allowing contributions from a range of teachers, and allowing a continuous evaluation of the effectiveness of the scheme in action.
